Cycling north we cross the confluence of the Platte River into the Mighty Missouri, on our way to Fort Atkinson, where Lewis and Clark had their first council with Indians. Riding is easy through the prosperous little farming communities of the Missouri River Valley. As we enter into the Dakotas the Missouri River becomes big water, with four dams holding back the flow, creating a recreation oasis for hundreds of miles through South Dakota. As you are riding along, it’s not hard to imagine Lewis and Clark and their hunting party’s marching through the vast open plains of the Dakotas. Our second day off will be spent in the South Dakota State Capitol of Pierre, site of the Teton Sioux Council in September of 1804. The Native American influence, and interaction with the Lewis and Clark expedition, becomes more apparent as we cycle through the vast Dakota hills.

Far reaching vistas and an abundance of rich Native American history awaits the cyclists through North Dakota and Montana. One of the most compeling Lewis and Clark interpretations along the route is found in Washburn at the L&C Interpretive Center. See a replica of the 1804-5 Mandan Winter Quarters, and up the road visit the childhood village of Sakakawea on the Knife River. We will pedal through the Dakota Badlands into the Big Sky Country of Montana, where the Rocky Mountains begin to rise up around us. On our day off in Great Falls we will have the opportunity to experience for ourselves the grandeur of the Great Falls of the Missouri that the Mandans had told Lewis and Clark about the previous winter. Also at the Falls is the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, depicting the lenghty struggle of the Corp of Discovery to portage around the magnificent falls.

Leaving Great Falls we will climb through the Rockies to Rogers Pass, where we will cross the Continental Divide and descend down the timbered pass along the Blackfoot River into Missoula. Our next day begins climbing from the Clarks Fork River in Missoula along Lolo Creek toward Lolo Pass, then its downhill along what is said by many of our riders to be, “one of the most beautiful rides anyone could imagine.” There are plenty of places to cool off as you wind along the Lochsa and Clearwater Rivers into Lewiston. A day off in Lewiston will get us ready for the last week of this adventure. We will follow the Snake River out of town and climb through the rolling hills of wheat that will deliver us to the Columbia River. Towering columns of basalt watch us pass, as we cruise along the Columbia River. Cycling past waterfalls on the Historic Columbia River Highway, we make our way through the Cascade Mountains toward the Pacific Ocean, and the end of the trail at Seaside.
